Computer users use PCs (often referred to as ``seats'' although
actually finding a comfortable chair is another problem entirely) to
do their work. PCs refered to this document are assumed to be running the
MS Windows operating system. Users may work
on them locally, or can connect them to other computers on our
network. They support high resolution graphics and a user almost
always use a mouse as part of the interface. (Some PCs are installed with the
Linux operating system which offeres similar functionality to Windows these days.
The model in the Particle Physics department is that we generally use these systems
to connect to much more powerful systems to actually do the majority of the physics analysis).
Each PC carries a unique identifier of the following form:-
PPxxnn Particle Physics running MS Windows
Where xx indicates Windows version e.g. WS
ADMINn ADMINistration
where n is some number e.g. PPWS273, ADMIN1.
We run a version of Microsoft Windows that allows a group of users to share a
network of PCs. It is the standard system used by the sub-department PCs.
All students and staff will uusually have access to a PC on their desk.
We no longer have rooms full of shared PCs.
