Our Networks

The diagram below shows our local LAN, MAN and WAN. Within the subdepartment most computers are UNIX servers and PCs running MS Windows. Our LAN, uses CAT5 (Category 5 Cable - a cable rated up to 150 MBits/sec) twisted pair cable. The low level protocol is ETHERNET over which runs TCP/IP. Our main WAN connection is to the Oxford Campus LAN (at 100MBits/sec), and from there a 2.5 GBits/sec connection a MAN connecting Reading and RAL and then to Super JANET. From JANET gateways exist to the Internet.
