Redirecting Output from a Remote Computer

How you tell a remote computer to send full screen output to your local workstation depends on what operating system the remote computer is running.

If the remote computer is one running UNIX the command you use is:-

setenv DISPLAY node_name:0
For example, if your local PC is PPWS123:-
setenv DISPLAY ppws123.physics.ox.ac.uk:0

Each time you login remotely you ought to have to tell the remote computer where to send its output, after all you may not always use the same local workstation. However, our machines automatically attempt to set up the routing information as described above so you can normally get away without doing it. To demonstrate this, use Exceed to connect to PPLXINT8 and then:-

ssh -x pplxint9

and type:-

printenv DISPLAY

to see what has been automatically set. Further, if using SSH to connect (see section 8.7) you can use the -X option to automatically set the DISPLAY on any remote machine.
