Basic File Operations

On PCs and UNIX workstations you can manipulate files using the GUI. What software you use depends on what machine you are currently working on:-

PC
As we run MS Windows as our interface on our PCs, you don't have to do anything to start using the GUI. From the very start you have a Start Menu which holds sub menus, and shortcut icons on the desktop. Look for the Start Menu and click on it with the left mouse button. Move the pointer to the Programs option, you will see a list of groups to choose from.

You can start by opening (moving the pointer over the menu options) some of the menu groups, if the item has a black arrow next to it it contains more programs or groups. Alternatively you can view programs by double-clicking on the Programs shortcut on the desktop, and double-clicking on program groups. If many windows are open use the right-hand button of the mouse over the menu bar and select Minimise all, Tile, Cascade, or use the X button in the top right-hand corner of the window to close.

To learn how to perform basic file operations with windows look for an icon called Internet Explorer. If you cannot find one, then click the right-hand mouse button over the Start Menu button and select Internet Explorer. From the Explorer menu click on Help and to get started either select Contents, Index or Find.

UNIX workstation

Use a GUI like Gnome or KDE.
