For modest documents such as internal memos just using an editor and typing in plain text may be good enough. The output from many application programs and files extracted from mail fall into this category. An editor can be used to preview such files. It is a good idea to preview program output before printing. Having looked at it you may decide only to print part of it (by editing out the unwanted parts) or indeed not to print it at all!
