Working at a PC

If PCs are new to you see section 9.3.5 to learn a little about the Start menu.

PCs will have names of the form PPxxnnn or possibly ADMINn where xx indicates the Windows version and n is a one to three digit number e.g. PPWS273. First make sure that nobody is using it. If the screen is blank, move the mouse to activate it. If there is a screen asking for you Username and Password proceed, using your MS Windows system password, otherwise find another workstation. Before clicking O.K., make sure the Domain field is set to PHYSICS.

Look for the Internet Explorer icon and double click it. This is a full web browser and, more importantly for now, gives you access to pages on UNIX and MS Windows. You can find the Computing Support pages by typing:-

PCs are used throughout the sub department for just about every aspect of its activity. They are used by the secretaries and the administration, by the Design Office, the Photographic department, Central Electronics and the Workshop. About the only areas still free of them are the Common Room and the loos!! However for physics they are not (yet) the main workhorse although they are used such as things document preparation and image scanning. Most of the time physicists use them to connect to UNIX servers. To do this look for the Exceed icon and double click it. If it has been properly configured you will be offered a choice of machines to connect to. Choose:-

If Exceed has not been properly configured ask for help, look at section 7.7.1 of the MS Windows chapter, or consult the Web as described above.

While you are working on the remote machine you can also switch back to the local PC in a number of ways besides just iconising the Exceed window. For example, by pressing Alt Tab (the Tab key is the one at the left of the main keyboard with arrows in both directions). Pressing this repeatedly will cycle through all the active windows.

Once you have finished on the remote machine, completely log out from it (including using Quit from the Session Manager window) which will bring you back to the Exceed window. From here select Close.

Once you have finished with the PC, exit from any applications you are running and then, from the Start menu on the taskbar select the Log off option.

Never forget to log out when you are finished at a public area PC so that others can use it!!.
