Different printers use different graphics languages so rather than have a version of TEX and LATEX for each, these programs just use a special form that can then be converted to any required language using a utility program. The dvips converts the .DVI to Postscript. Typing:-
dvips examplecreates the file example.ps containing Postscript ready for printing. In a similar way dvihp would create example.hp containing PCL data. To print example.ps on the laser printer outside room 664 type:-
print5p example.psNote that in this case you have to include the .ps extension, unlike the latex and dvips commands which assume the right extension.
